CLOSETS

About the Project

Last year I began to wonder about the meaning and origin of the term closet - why was this word chosen to describe the experience of concealment and shame, that a significant part of the LGBT community around the world has to go through. To answer this question, and understand the meaning of the closet in depth, I interviewed a number of LGBT people in Israel and asked them, among other things, what the closet is for them, do they feel the entire LGBT community experiences the same closet, and do they think the closet experience is the glue of the community. After those interviews, I photographed the wardrobes of those interviewees, and created collages that combine their closets into a colorful and comprehensive one, in a series of works of different sizes.
