OPERATION

About the Project

In my high school graduation exhibition, Operation, I chose to explore the connection between sex and death. In doing so, I created a hybrid between a bedroom and an operating room, to connect those themes. This hybrid includes a double operating table with pillows made of wax castings of sterile fabrics; a cold, metallic bedside table; gypsum molds of infusion bags instead of pictures on the wall; and an infusion set that serves as a useless standing lamp. The work offers a parallel between sex and surgery through the variety of possibilities that these experiences offer - healing and severe injury (to the mind or body), separation and reunion, life and death, pleasure and pain. Parts of the exhibition were created spontaneously. For example, the gypsum molds of the wet rags and the infusion bags were supposed to be thrown away, but once mold grew on them they added another dimension to the life-to-death dialogue at work. The mold indicates decay, but is in fact a living creature in itself.
